The hot charging Red Zone ladies team produced their usual final round fireworks to retain both the A and B division titles in the annual Eileen Belcher golf championship at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course at the weekend.

Red’s A team collected a total of 18 points in the 54-hole Foursomes Match Play event, to beat both the Green and Blue teams by seven points.

The B team posted a total of 20 points to win by six points from the Yellow Zone, who however managed to retain the C division title for players playing off handicap 21 and 35 points.

The Yellow team won the C division Palmer trophy with 21 points, 10 points better than Blue, while the Red team was third with 10 points and the Green team was last on six points.

During the final round, the Red Zone’s first seed of Serah Khanyereri and Ashley Awuor beat the Yellow pair of Agnes Nyakio and Rachna Patel 2-1 to give the Reds their first two points.

There after, Joyce Wanjiru and team captain Wanjiru Karume also posted a 2-1 victory against Mercy Nyanchama and Frankie Gichuru. The pair of Betty Ndenderu and Mary Cox won 3-2 against Esther Karuga and Dorcas Mukabi.

It was however a tough encounter in the match between the Red’s Aisha Duba and Naomi Wakesho against the Yellow’s Jaini Shah and Liz Mbuthia, a match that went all the way to the 18th hole, where the two teams halved for the Red’s seven points against the Yellow’s one.

“We had a fine team with lots of experience though it was the team work and looking after the players needs which contributed to our victory. As a captain or team leader you must look after the needs of your players and try and motivate them,” said the Red’s A team captain Wanjiru Karume.

In the B team captained by Royal Nairobi’s Sarah Hoare, the pair of Nancy Ikinu and Nellie Kairu scored an easy 7-5 victory against the Yellow’s Patricia Odima and Mary Maingi, while Mary Chebukati and Sara Hoare beat the pair of Joyce and Miriam Wanjiku 6-5 and Evelyn Noah and Mary Kimemia won 1-up.

The only pair to loose was that of Betty Gacheru and Doreen Kairuthi, who went down by two holes to Hu Yu and Madhvi Shah, for six points in the closing round against The Yellow’s two.

This year, the tournament formerly an inter-district championship was sponsored by CIC Group, ICEA Lion, KRA , Safaricom and Alliance In Motion Global.

Tough Warriors shatter KPA’s unbeaten run

Published

Ulinzi Warriors put up a spirited fight to shatter Kenya Ports Authority’s unbeaten run in the Kenya Basketball Federation men’s Premier League at the KPA Makande hall on Sunday.

This happened as KPA women beat Kenyatta University Oryx 59-41 in their top flight encounter.

It was a sweet victory for Ulinzi, who last beat KPA in the 2016 play-offs.

Ulinzi started the match with clear intent racing to a 22-11 run in the first quarter with Tiberius Menya combing well with red-hot Eric Mutoro, who nailed three pointers at will.

Ulinzi, however, suffered a set back in the second quarter when Menya was ejected for committing two fouls, a decision that was strongly opposed by the soldiers causing a quarter hour stop to the game.

When play resumed, KPA pressed their advantage to outscore Ulinzi 22-10 in the second quarter for a 33-32 half time lead.

That’s probably the best the Dockers could do as the soldiers went ahead to outscore them 20-19 and 20-14 in the third and fourth quarters respectively to claim the big win.

Eric Mutoro scored a game high 25 points while John Washika and Antonia Bwire scored 14 and 11 points respectively.

6 houses torched in Uasin Gishu after man dies in brew den

Published

Six houses were set on fire on Sunday near the busy Kipkaren market on the border of Kakamega-Uasin Gishu counties as residents reacted to death of a villager in an illicit brew den.

Residents said they torched the houses to flush out suspected criminals who were living in the dingy mud-walled structures used for selling illicit brew.

The body of the man was found lying near a footpath next to one of the houses in the place that has been nicknamed Kasarani.

Police collected the body and transported it to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) mortuary in Eldoret.

Villagers said the man had gone to the place for a drink early in the morning but was attacked and stabbed twice.

His assailants are reported to have robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash.

There had been earlier fears that the killing of the villager could ignite tension at the border but traders from both counties went about their activities as usual.

“We got fed up with the activities of the suspects who have been hiding in the place and decided to burn down the structures,” said one of the villagers.

The scene is a short distance from the Kipkaren police post.

Police officers in plain clothes visited the scene and said the incident was being investigated.

The Ngenyilel location chief Sammy Tororey said two suspects who were living in one of the houses were being sought to record statements.

“There is no tension since the villagers had got tired with the activities of those living in the homes and decided to flush them out,” said Mr Tororey.

224 Tanzania ferry tragedy bodies recovered

Published

The Tanzanian government said Sunday 224 bodies had been recovered following the Lake Victoria ferry accident last Thursday.

Transport, Communication and Works minister Isack Kamwele, made the announcement during the burial of nine of the victims of the mv Nyerere tragedy.

He gave the breakdown of the dead, so far, as 126 adult females, 71 adult males, 17 young females and 10 young males.

The initial reports, added Mr Kamwele, indicated that 265 passengers were on board the ill-fated mv Nyerere, against the capacity of 101.

“We thank Ukara Island residents for recuing 40 people immediately after the accident,” he said.

A total of 219 bodies have already been identified and 214 of them collected by family members.

“The government has taken DNA samples of unidentified bodies to enable identification once their relatives resurface,” Disaster Management minister Jinesta Mhagama, said.

Mr Kamwelwe disclosed that a total of $82,000 (TSh190m) had been donated by wellwishers to support the rescue mission.

MV Nyerere was made in 2004 in the country and started operation immediately. It had had two major maintenances; in 2013 and 2015.

In June 2018, the two engines and the gear box were replaced.
