The hot charging Red Zone ladies team produced their usual final round fireworks to retain both the A and B division titles in the annual Eileen Belcher golf championship at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course at the weekend.
Red’s A team collected a total of 18 points in the 54-hole Foursomes Match Play event, to beat both the Green and Blue teams by seven points.
The B team posted a total of 20 points to win by six points from the Yellow Zone, who however managed to retain the C division title for players playing off handicap 21 and 35 points.
The Yellow team won the C division Palmer trophy with 21 points, 10 points better than Blue, while the Red team was third with 10 points and the Green team was last on six points.
During the final round, the Red Zone’s first seed of Serah Khanyereri and Ashley Awuor beat the Yellow pair of Agnes Nyakio and Rachna Patel 2-1 to give the Reds their first two points.
There after, Joyce Wanjiru and team captain Wanjiru Karume also posted a 2-1 victory against Mercy Nyanchama and Frankie Gichuru. The pair of Betty Ndenderu and Mary Cox won 3-2 against Esther Karuga and Dorcas Mukabi.
It was however a tough encounter in the match between the Red’s Aisha Duba and Naomi Wakesho against the Yellow’s Jaini Shah and Liz Mbuthia, a match that went all the way to the 18th hole, where the two teams halved for the Red’s seven points against the Yellow’s one.
“We had a fine team with lots of experience though it was the team work and looking after the players needs which contributed to our victory. As a captain or team leader you must look after the needs of your players and try and motivate them,” said the Red’s A team captain Wanjiru Karume.
In the B team captained by Royal Nairobi’s Sarah Hoare, the pair of Nancy Ikinu and Nellie Kairu scored an easy 7-5 victory against the Yellow’s Patricia Odima and Mary Maingi, while Mary Chebukati and Sara Hoare beat the pair of Joyce and Miriam Wanjiku 6-5 and Evelyn Noah and Mary Kimemia won 1-up.
The only pair to loose was that of Betty Gacheru and Doreen Kairuthi, who went down by two holes to Hu Yu and Madhvi Shah, for six points in the closing round against The Yellow’s two.
This year, the tournament formerly an inter-district championship was sponsored by CIC Group, ICEA Lion, KRA , Safaricom and Alliance In Motion Global.
